If family photos with horses mean wet socks, solid horses, and a property that does most of the work — this session absolutely delivered.
I met Norman, Kassie, and Maddie on their beautiful property just outside of Merrill, tucked right next to the Pine River. Fall showed up exactly how you hope it will — blue skies, sunshine, and that crisp-but-comfortable air that makes everything feel easy from the start.
Six Horses. One River. Wet Socks Were Involved.
We kicked things off down by the river with everyone paired up — each person with their own two horses. Yes, that’s six horses total, every single one a different color. All six horses were relaxed and steady — a clear reflection of the time and consistency put into them.
To get that shot, I waded straight into the Pine River. Shallow enough for rubber boots… allegedly. Plot twist: my boots had holes. Did I have wet socks? Yes. Did I still get the shot? Also yes. Priorities. 😅
This is exactly why family photos with horses work so well when they happen somewhere meaningful. The animals are settled, the people are relaxed, and nothing feels forced or overproduced.
Individual Moments + Big Family Energy
From there, we moved through individual photos with the horses and wrapped things up with full family photos down by the river before heading up toward the barn. No rushing, no stiff posing — just letting the session unfold naturally and keeping the energy easy.
We even tried to bring Maddie’s sheep into the mix. They declined the invitation and had zero interest in participating — which honestly just added to the story of the night.
Ending the Night With Cats (Obviously)
As the sun dropped and we wrapped things up, Maddie introduced me to her cats — and let me tell you, they were COOL. If I didn’t already have three at home, I might’ve accidentally adopted one on the spot. 😝
Sessions like this are exactly why I love photographing families with horses. They’re personal, relaxed, and never feel cookie-cutter. Real people, real animals, real moments — plus the occasional soggy boot.
